Option 1:     August 26th-September 1st     Khutzeymateen Wilderness

26th, Whales and dolphins: We board a boat on the morning of our first day to photograph whales. The coast of Vancouver is home to large numbers of resident and transient Orcas, Humpbacks, and Grey Whales. That night we will lodge in Vancouver near the airport.

27th, Journey into the Great Bear Rainforest: We will take a short flight (approx. 2 hours) to the town of Prince Rupert. With the remainder of the day we will photograph some of the provincial parks around Prince Rupert, and rest up for our excursion into the Khutzeymateen Wilderness the following morning. We will stay in Prince Rupert this evening.

28th-30th: We get on a float the morning of the 28th, and head to the Khutzeymateen Lodge, where we will spend the next three nights. The all inclusive lodge provides unique access to this renowned grizzly bear sanctuary. Here we will photograph bears eating salmon, along with the potential for other wildlife such as seals and coastal wolves.

31st: We take the float plane back to Prince Rupert, where we board a flight back to Vancouver.

Cost Includes:

  • All Transportation during the trip:
    • Roundtrip Airfare (Standard Seating, but seating upgrade is available)
    • Roundtrip Float Plane from Prince Rupert to the Lodge
  • All of our daily chef prepared meals, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included. They provide wine or beer with dinner.
  • All Lodging (the nights of 26th-31st)

Cost: $14,850 USD

Option 2:     August 26th-September 1st     Bella Coola

Accommodations: We will be staying in a brand new home/cabin. Everything is sold out in Bella Coola, but we are lucky that one of my local contacts is building a brand new home/cabin and wasn't going to be listing it for rent until next week, so I was able to make an early reservation request. It has two bedrooms, and large living area, including amenities such as a kitchen, washer & dryer, and bathrooms.

Bella Coola lies in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, and is easily accessible from Vancouver. Our time here will largely focus on bears catching salmon, but it will include much more. The landscapes are equally remarkable, including glaciers, and rivers, mountains, and old growth rainforests. Every day will be packed with photography.

26th: Take a short and scenic coastal flight (approx. 1 hr) to Bella Coola. The flight departs from Vancouver’s South Terminal. I will have a vehicle prepared and pick you up when you land in Bella Coola. After settling in and grabbing some lunch, we will photograph the bears catching their own lunch. From a safe platform, designed for photographing bears, we can photograph as they chase the spawning salmon.

27th & 28th: We will float the Anarko river with an experienced river guide and photograph the bears from water level as they fish for salmon. This provides a much different vantage point, as we are able to photograph the bear at eye level. There are real advantages to both perspectives, but being on the water is truly an incredible experience.

29th: We take to the air in a helicopter or float plane, in order to get a bird eyes view of the valley. Bella Coola and the surrounding area is full of glaciers, waterfalls, alpine meadows, and mountains, all of which are only visible from the air. Keep in mind, we are in the heart of one of the wildest ecosystems on the planet, so the vast majority of the landscape is inaccessible. This aerial view will provide a breathtaking and unique perspective of the Great Bear Rainforest. After our time in the air, we will return to photographing bears catching salmon on various streams.

30th & 31th: We join Captain Leonard for a private excursion on his boat and search for wildlife along the coast line such as whales and bears. In the process, we will photograph landscape features such as fjorlands, and glaciers. Leonard has a lifetime of experience in this wilderness, and we will have access to remote river systems with few if any people, but many bears. Meals are included.

1st: Fly out of Bella Coola to Vancouver.

Total Cost: $11,250 USD

Cost is all inclusive, with the exception of some meals.

  • Roundtrip airfare from Vancouver to Bella Coola and back. (Flight upgrades are optional)
  • Transportion in Bella Coola
  • All charted river boats, scenic flights, and coastal boats.
  • All lodging in Bella Coola.
